Steer Clear of Toxic PFAs in Your Reproductive and Sexual Wellness Products
The recent settlement from Thinx underwear regarding their use of toxic PFAs has been a major wake-up call for reproductive and sexual wellness products. We all want to ensure that the products we use are safe, but it can be difficult to determine which materials are safe and which should be avoided. In this blog, we’ll dive into what exactly PFAs are and why they should be avoided when shopping for reproductive and sexual wellness products.
What Are PFAs?
PFAs stands for “per-fluoroalkyl substances.” This family of chemicals includes PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate). These particular chemicals have been used in many different types of products, including food packaging materials, clothing, furniture, and even non-stick cookware. Unfortunately, they can also be found in certain reproductive and sexual wellness products and have been linked to health risks such as cancer and hormone disruption.
What are some sexual wellness and reproductive health products with PFAs?
Back when I worked in sex shops in California and Texas in the mid 2000s, we were working tirelessly to inform customers and those in our community about toxic chemicals in sex toys. Sadly, because sex toys are often sold as “novelty purposes only” they are not subject to regulatory standards that other health products usually have to follow.
Unfortunately, usually the toys that are the cheapest and most affordable are the ones with the most toxic substances. Some dead giveaways are:
Toys that smell chemically when you open to package
Toys that leak or seep
Toys that stick to the packaging
When in a pinch, use these toys with condoms or other barriers. Otherwise look for toys made with 100% surgical-grade silicone, stainless steel or glass. Companies that we love include:
Maude
Dame
Feelmore

Why Should I Avoid PFAs?
In addition to the risk of health problems associated with these chemicals, there is also evidence that long-term exposure to PFAs can adversely affect your reproductive health. Studies have shown that women exposed to high levels of these toxins may experience irregular periods and infertility issues. Furthermore, research has revealed that these chemicals may also interfere with hormones like estrogen and testosterone in both men and women—which can lead to a variety of reproductive issues.
Chemical slike PFAs and Phthalates are often used to soften the plastic for a more pliable or “realistic” feel, however these chemicals are known to cause issues with:
Fertility
Asthma
Allergies
Metabolism
Diabetes
Thyroid issues
These are not just known to affect the users themselves, but also potentially pass down from generation to generation.
What Can I Do To Avoid PFAs?
The best way to avoid exposure to these toxic chemicals is to ensure that any reproductive or sexual wellness products you use do not contain any form of PFA. Fortunately, many companies make it easy for consumers to identify which items do not contain any potentially harmful compounds by clearly labeling their products as “PFA-free” or “PFOA-free” (perfluorooctanoic acid). Additionally, it’s essential to read product labels carefully before making any purchases so you know exactly what you’re getting—and make sure you never buy anything without knowing all the ingredients first!
It's also important to note that some companies may use other names for these types of chemicals on their labels—so it's always a good idea to do your own research before buying anything! Additionally, when it comes time for disposal of any product containing PFA’s proper disposal is very important.
It's essential for us all to stay aware of potential dangers when shopping for reproductive and sexual wellness products. As this recent settlement from Thinx underwear shows us, even well-known brands might not always have our health interests at heart when creating their products. By staying informed about what goes into our body care items—and avoiding anything containing potentially harmful substances like PFAs—we can keep ourselves healthier while still enjoying the pleasure that comes from taking care of our bodies!
