“If Miss Honeychurch ever takes to live as she plays, it will be very exciting both for us and for her.”  -E.M. Forster, A Room With A View

The Work

Why do we suffer? Because we fear. Rejection, loss, change, failure, humiliation, loneliness, abandonment. No, the world has not invented any new fears. How do we meet fear?  We run, fight, hide, blame, whine, push, control, cling, appease, numb ourselves, pity ourselves, play victim, play martyr, hoard security till we suffocate, lock parts of ourselves away and drag ourselves through our precious days for the sake of safety and appearances. No, we can never get enough of what we don’t really want.  And the wheel of suffering turns again.

We are all powerless, as Justin Witte writes, over the things we have to learn in this lifetime. The lesson is always the same: we must face our fears. In therapy, we come to see what we fear might be the very thing we need. The point of life, after all, is not to manage but to live. The possibility is that we can be artists of our lives, we can conduct the horns and drums and strings of our inner selves. Instead of forever tuning our instruments, we might actually play: play the symphonies, the operas, the punk songs inside us all.
