Why is sexual wellness important?

When it comes to our overall health and wellness, we often focus on eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep. While those three things are indeed important, another aspect of our health is just as vital: sexual wellness. Here's why sexual wellness is so important and how you can ensure you care for yourself.

Sex is Good for Overall Health

Sexual wellness is important for your overall health and wellbeing. For one thing, when you have an active and satisfying sex life, it releases endorphins that boost your mood and help reduce stress. In addition, sex has been shown to lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and even boost immunity (Source). So if you're looking for ways to improve your overall health, paying attention to your sexual wellness is a great place to start.

Sex Strengthens Relationship

In addition to being good for your physical health, paying attention to your sexual wellness can also do wonders for your relationship. Sex is a way to connect with your partner physically and emotionally and can help create intimacy and closeness. If you're unhappy with your sex life, it can be a sign that something else is going on in the relationship that needs to be addressed. Communication is key in sexual wellness (more on that later), so if you're unhappy with what's happening (or not happening) in the bedroom, talk to your partner about it. Complicating matters further is the fact that many people struggle to talk about sex openly and honestly. If you're uncomfortable discussing your sexual needs with your partner, it can be difficult to have a healthy and satisfying sex life. That's why communication is key in sexual wellness—if you can't talk about what you want or need, chances are you won't get it.

Sex is play

Adults in capitalistic systems don't have many opportunities to play. However, sex can offer an arena for you and your partner(s) to be playful. This playfulness can benefit both you and the relationship. For yourself, sex provides a way to release emotions and express yourself in ways other activities cannot. Similarly for the relationship, sexual play can offer a different way to communicate and bring lightness to your lives.

Sexual Wellness Includes…

  • Knowing your boundaries

  • Comfort communicating desires, needs, boundaries

  • Sense of bodily autonomy

  • Comfort with self

  • Regular testing for STI

  • Seeking knowledge to stay informed

Stay curious and playful in your journey for sexual wellness. There’s no one right way to do this, so work on being kind and compassionate to yourself in this process.

Sexual wellness is an important part of our overall health—yet it's often an area we don't pay enough attention to. If you're looking for ways to boost your physical and emotional health and strengthen your relationship, paying attention to your sexual wellbeing is a great place to start. And the good news is that plenty of resources, including therapy, are available to help you do just that. So why not get started today? Your mind—and body—will thank you for it!
